Log 19-12 Geraldton

Well, it’s been two weeks since we got back to Perth & what a 2 weeks it’s been. First, sitting on the tarmac at Perth for 7 hours while our new friend, Dave Barr sat outside from 10;30 till 7:15 when we got out, plus his wife & daughter had been taking in the local shopping centre for all that time. As the airport couldn’t give us a time, I couldn’t tell Dave. Although I did say that he shouldn’t worry about us & go home, which he ignored.
We then stayed with Dave & Chris at their place at Forrestfield till Sat morning & returned to the Midland c/park. As we had planned dinner with the Barrs on Monday & we wanted to take them out for dinner, we filled in the time going into town & seeing Kings Park. As we didn’t know where to catch the bus we decided to start walking, it was only 2 K’s to the park but the last part was up an unbelievable hill. The park was great but we caught the bus back to town, missed the stop closest to the station & had to walk back.
After dinner with the Barrs we left the next day for Bunburry, taking our time we drove down the coast but the national park we had selected to stay at was closed when we got there. It was starting to rain so we turned back for Mundurah,  hoping to find a caravan park on the way. Within minutes we were in an unbelievable electrical storm, rain coming down in sheets, lighting flashing all over the sky. No intermediate parks so we took the first park we found in town, it had been a 50K return trip & the storm continued for hours but at least we were snug on a powered site.
The next day we continued back down the coast and found that if we had continued South we would have found a park 20K’s further on. Arriving at Bunburry we found it was just another large country town so we drove back North to Australind, found a park on the edge of the bay & stayed the night & returned to Midland for our interview with the club committee the next day. All went well but Dave & Sue had commitments till the 29th so that gave us 10 days to fill in. We decided to head North this time, travelling the new(ish) coast road up to Dongera.
We started by checking out Perth’s beaches, stopping at Sorrento for a look around, great beach, parkland with benches dotted around & another vast marina. Where do all these private cruisers come from? Called in to Two Rocks, then Quinns Beach a bit further on (still in a time warp but I don’t think for long) & stopped for the night at Moore River at a small o’night area by the side of the road. From there we continued on our exploration, calling in to various seaside settlements, Ledge Point (another tin shed village like Quobba), Cervantes, known for it’s surfing, Jurien Bay (another town due to come into the 21st century) & our stop for the night was at Sandy Cape Recreation Park, but we weren’t happy there so continued on to Leeman.
Leeman is another quiet little coastal town, but the c/van park is right on the beach & shady so we decided to fill in a couple of nights there. Walks along the beach & around town together with a few chats to people filled our day & we left for Dongera feeling refreshed.
After spending a couple of hours at Dongera & Port Denison we decided to push on to Geraldton. Fuel, shopping & lunch on the waterfront saw us ready to stop for the night, we picked an overnight stop called Fig Tree Crossing as we had looked at on the way South as it was in an open country environment & there were nice shady areas.
We still have a week to fill in before starting our new job & we are wondering where to go next.

Log 17-11 Perth

Leaving Wagin we proceeded to Goomalling for another 3 day visit before moving on to Perth. We then stayed at Midland Caravan Park for 3 days as there was easy access to the city from there. Well, I must comment on Perths public transport system. It was like a well oiled machine. Obtaining a bus/tran timetable we arrived at the bus stop 5 minuted before appointed time. Bus arrived on time, stopped at Midland r/way station where we had 5 minutes to catch the train. Train arrived in town on schedule, what a difference to NSW.

Alighting from the train we found ourselves right in the middle of the city, no traipsing for blocks to get anywhere, & what a city, visually dazzling, the concourse from the station was between 10mt & 20mts wide, lined with shops along one side & views over the city on the other side (You get off the station one level up). Beautiful old buildings line the streets which have been made into a mall 3 blocks by 3 blocks. No traffic to worry about, sidewalk cafes abound, the standard of dress (females only) is very high & the city has a lively personality of its own. It was Friday when we went in & we were amazed at how many people busily went about their business.

We strolled along checking out the shops then proceeded to parliament house & St georges Cathedral where we attended a service for Armistice Day. We then proceeded to the waterfront to see the Swan River. Ferries go from here to South Perth, Fremantle & Rotnest Island. Then it was time for lunch, a little more sightseeing & the trip home. No holdups, connections the same.

Saturday we were a little more adventurous & proceeded to Fremantle by train, no problems, no holdups. We checked out the famous markets there, the Perth yacht club & Endeavour Harbour. We’ve never seen so many boats, all pleasure cruisers & boats up to 25 feet are kept in racks 2 high! There must have been thousands of vessels! After walking around for the best part of 5 hours we turned for home arriving at the station with just 1 minute to spare. For some reason the train lost 10 minutes on the journey to Perth & the another 5 to Midland. When we arrived the bus had left & the next one was 1 ½ hours later! After ½ an hour & a lot of mucking about we managed to get on a bus for a different route that passed near the caravan park & so ended our day.

Sunday we proceeded to David & Christines (friends of David & Sally) place at Forrestfield where we will spend the last few days before flying home. Truck needs tyres & another service so we will try to get these things done.

David & Chris have turned out to be very nice people (of course) who regularly have club members stay on their property, as we drove in we saw a sign pointing out where we should park so that power & water were easily available. Dave is in the process of remodeling his 5th wheeler & is doing a fantastic job. We’ve spent 3 days at C & D’s place getting new tyres, having Wherarwee serviced again & generally getting ready for our flight home for Zamira’s wedding. Chris was very nice & took us to the airport on the morning of our flight. Flight was uneventful & we finally arrived home around 8PM. No power, no hot water, nothing to eat!

Log 07-11 Wagin

Well, another week has passed & we’re still in Wagin. Our stopping place is the local showground & there are only 2 vehicles here in this vast, open space. We’ve got to know the other couple, played a few games of disk bowls with them & found that the local club chapter is meeting here this weekend. So, with a little prompting from them, decided to stay. On Thursday the others started to arrive, with them came David & Sue Barr, the couple who organized the rally to Kalgoorlie, also Martin & Chris who were on the rally. The weekend, although wet & cold, was well attended & we all had a great time as there were large sheds on the property, unlocked & accessible to us for BBQ’s, activities etc. We had a bad storm one day with horizontal rain & hail, no damage thank goodness. We’ve been through a few storms in WA now & they are really severe.

Just a few pics to show for the week.
